TextTris - version 1.0
by Adrian B. Danieli
1992 Acumen Software
===============================================================================
Requirements (and features):
* 256-color VGA / MCGA graphics
* Adlib/SoundBlaster or compatible music card sound effects (optional)
* Medium to fast CPU (mostly for higher levels)
* At least 261K free
* Joystick (optional)
===============================================================================
The Game:
The object of this game is to try to maneuver letters to spell words as
they fall from a pipe, at the top of the screen, into the "well". Spelling
longer words with uncommon letters (Z, X, Q, etc.) will earn you more points
than smaller words with common letters (A,E,R,T, etc.).
===============================================================================
To Start:
To play the game with default options, simply type "TEXTTRIS" and press
the <ENTER> key. The Acumen Software logo followed by the TextTris title
screen will appear. Press a key (or wait a bit) to continue.
To start the game with the joystick active, use the "-J" command-line
switch. This is not required to use a joystick, pressing ALT-J in the game
will also toggle the joystick on/off (see below).
If you have an Adlib/SoundBlaster music card, using the "-Q" command-line
switch will disable sound effects. Again, you may disable music inside of the
game as well (see below).
Here's an example for starting TextTris with the joystick active and no
Adlib/SoundBlaster sound effects: "TEXTTRIS -J -Q"
===============================================================================
The Options Menu:
Next you will see a seemingly complex options menu which provides you with
a great amount of control over the different aspects of the game. Each option
is described below:
USE 3 LETTER WORDS? YES/NO - Should TextTris check for 3 letter words,
or ignore them? You might want this option set to NO if you're trying to spell
larger words since TextTris will find and clear the first word it recognizes.
USE 4 LETTER WORDS? YES/NO - You can control checking for 4 letter
words also. This option is usually YES.
USE 5 LETTER WORDS? YES/NO - 5 letter word checking is available only
in the registered version (sorry!).
COUNT REPEAT WORDS? YES/NO - Should words you have already spelled be
added to your score? If this is NO, duplicate words will count for only 1
point.
DOUBLE-WORD-VALUE BLOCKS? ON/OFF - Occasionally, a block will appear a
red color instead of the normal blue. These are double-word-value blocks and
will, as the name implies, double your word score if you spell a word which
uses this letter. Setting this OFF will not allow this type of bonus.
TRIPLE-WORD-VALUE BLOCKS? ON/OFF - These blocks are purple instead of
blue, and triple a word's score if used. Available only in the registered
version (sorry!).
QUESTION-MARK BLOCKS? ON/OFF - If this option is ON, a "?" block will
appear every once in a while instead of a normal letter. When this appears,
quickly press the letter key on the keyboard and the block will change to that
letter. This option is useful for getting uncommon or badly needed letters.
KEYWORD FEATURE? ON/OFF - When ON, if you spell the 5-letter keyword
located in the top left part of the play screen, all blocks on the screen will
vanish and you will have an empty well. This feature is essential for really
high scores.
STARTING LEVEL: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - Choose a starting level. Each
successive level is quicker than its predecessor. Also, each level has TWO
randomly-selected backgrounds. Levels 6-9 are only available in the registered
version.
INCREMENT LEVEL? YES/NO - Normally, after every 20 words you spell you
will advance to the next level (unless you're on level 5 in the unregistered
version or level 9 in the registered version), and get a bonus added to your
score. When this option is set to NO, the level will not increase and you will
receive no bonus. This option is available only in the registered version.
PRACTICE MODE? ON/OFF - Practice mode is available in the registered
version only. It allows beginners to control the verticle as well as the
horizontal movement of the blocks (i.e. it won't fall unless you want it to).
CHECK HIGH SCORES / STATS SCREEN? YES/NO - Setting this to YES will
view the high scores before beginning the next game.
PLAY GAME NOW? YES/NO - Set this to YES and you will begin.
Pressing ALT-J (in the options screens) will make the joystick active. Be sure
to have the joystick centered when you press this. Keyboard commands are also
accepted in joystick mode on the options screen.
Use the down arrow, <ENTER>, or joystick DOWN to advance from option to option.
Pressing the up arrow key or joystick UP will go back. When you reach the
final option and then advance again the game will begin. You can also press
"S" or "C" to start/continue which does the same thing.
To change an option's setting, press either the left or right arrow keys, or
one of the joystick BUTTONS.
To exit the game, hit either ALT-Q, ALT-X, or ESC at the options menu.
===============================================================================
The Play Screen:
On the left side of the play screen you'll see the well. The right side
is for statistics - displaying the total # of words spelled, total score,
the next letter (if selected), and the last 10 words you've spelled with their
word scores. On the left side, to the left of the pipe, the keyword is
displayed (if that option is ON). To the right of the pipe is the current
level number (unless you're in practice mode).
Pressing ALT-J will toggle between joystick/keyboard mode. Remember to keep
the joystick centered when you switch into joystick mode.
As the blocks fall out of the pipes, press the left and right arrow keys
(or joystick LEFT and joystick RIGHT) to position them. Press the down arrow
key (or joystick DOWN) to speed up the rate at which the block falls. To
return to the default fall-rate, either press up (or joystick UP), or move the
block left or right.
Levels will advance every 20 words (if you have incrementl level option
ON). If you spell the keyword, all the blocks on the screen will disappear.
Pressing the <HOME> key (or a joystick BUTTON) will turn the preview letter
option on and off.
To turn the sound effects on/off (Adlib/SoundBlaster only), press ALT-S or
ALT-M.
To exit the play screen and return to the options screen, hit ALT-X,
ALT-Q, or ESC.
If you have a high score or high word-score you will prompted to enter
your name (15 characters maximum). High scores are saved in the file
"TEXTTRIS.SCR". Delete this file to get rid of all current high scores.

This program has gone through many revisions and I am certain that I've gotten
all the major (and minor) bugs out. However, if you do find a bug, please
inform me. Also, I am hoping to add true SoundBlaster/SoundBlaster Pro support
to this game in the next few months. I just need to learn more on how to
program these sound cards. Don't hesitate to register though if you own one of
these sound cards since registered users can upgrade for a minimal fee (just
shipping & disk costs). Plus registrations mean added incentive...
Whether you choose to register or not, thanks for playing TextTris!
